Charter Itinerary and Carbon Awareness

The process of carbon offsetting your, or your client’s charter, has just got even easier. If you already use Charter Itinerary’s fantastic tool you may have noticed a new feature. Included in your itinerary template is the option to include an estimate of the carbon emissions relating to the estimated fuel consumption. In just one click you can request a no-obligation quote from us to counterbalance the estimated emissions. This new feature is designed to empower the charter market to make sustainable choices.

If you are not using Charter Itinerary’s tool you can still carbon offset the footprint of a charter using our Charter Carbon Offset service.

Progress in Yacht fuel options

On the 4th & 5th July 2024, our Managing Director, Rachel Goult, attended the Alternative Fuels and Advanced Yachting Technology Conference organised by the Yacht Club de Monaco as part of the 11th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. Apart from the wonderful location & hospitality of the YCM, and the added excitement brought by the university boat challenge teams, the conference was packed with insightful content. The conversation covered a wide scope of alternative fuels that could potentially be embraced by the superyacht sector in the not-so-distant future. Add on to this, sessions on sustainability measurement and the use of artificial intelligence and you have the ingredients for a perfect conference – which, in our opinion, it was!

Rachel has written a summary of her key takeaways from the event, which you can read here. The YCM conference brought the spotlight on various alternative fuels that could potentially be the fuels of the (not-so-distant!) future in the superyacht industry. In our opinion, ammonia and nuclear technologies are unlikely to take centre stage. Methanol and Hydrogen fuel technologies are ones to look out for, with hydrogen edging ahead in terms of scalability and current application. Automated sail technology is certainly a real, immediate solution, if we can accept the cost and the aesthetic design elements. Equally, we mustn’t forget biofuels or onboard solar panels that are being increasingly employed across the industry.

In the meantime, we suggest reducing your carbon footprint to a minimum by cruising efficiently and using biofuel whenever possible. Thereafter, carbon offset the unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions using Yacht Carbon Offset’s immediate and transparent carbon offset service. Act now to make a difference!

Project News

New Carbon Reduction Projects Available

We have recently added two new projects to our list of carbon reduction projects that are available to support our client’s carbon offset initiatives. These new carbon reduction projects, along with all our existing projects, have undergone a rigorous selection process to ensure that your carbon offset transaction is of the highest quality.

Mauritius Solar Power

Commissioned in April 2019, this project makes a substantial contribution to Mauritius’ renewable energy goals, accounting for an impressive 21% of the island’s total installed solar power capacity. The 17.5 MW Solar Power project provides power to the Central Electricity Board on the island of Mauritius and reduces the electricity grid’s heavy & costly dependence on fossil fuel-based power generation. In addition to the positive impact on the country’s power generation mix, the project brings significant beneficial impact on the local communities, providing clean drinking water and irrigation as well as supporting local infrastructure projects. The project supports local agriculture, with herbs, ginger and sweet potatoes planted near the facility. Mauritius – Solar Power (Henrietta)

India Cookstove Project

This initiative in Meghalaya, India, brings cleaner-burning cookstoves to the rural communities of the Garo people, a Tibeto-Burmese ethnic group who mainly rely on subsistence farming, empowering them to fight climate change and improve air quality. The project has successfully distributed and installed 5,000 Improved Cook Stoves (ICS), replacing older, less efficient models. The new stoves significantly reduce impact on the environment by reducing cooking time and fuel consumption, resulting in faster and cleaner cooking. Each ICS reduces carbon  & smoke emissions by at least 50%. The social & economic impact of this project are also significant. India – Garo Communities Cookstove Project.

Quantifying a Superyachts Carbon Footprint

Understanding the impact of carbon emissions can sometimes feel abstract, like trying to quantify the depth of an ocean without a reference point. Yet, to tackle climate change effectively, we need to translate these intangible concepts into something more concrete. We have put together a resource to help understand the volume and impact of one tonne of carbon: Quantifying a Superyacht’s Carbon Footprint

Understanding Carbon Offsetting in the Superyacht Community

In today’s environmentally conscious world, addressing carbon emissions has become a critical priority. As the superyacht industry navigates towards sustainability, carbon offsetting emerges as an important component of its environmental strategy. But what exactly is carbon offsetting, and how does it apply to the superyacht sector? For explanations on greenhouse gases, the concept of carbon offsetting, carbon markets, certification, and more take a look at our article Understanding Carbon Offsetting.

We hope your summer season is a busy one and we are looking forward to seeing you all at the Monaco Show!
