Yacht Carbon Offset is excited to announce the addition of a new solar power project to its carbon credit portfolio. The 20 MW Ambatolampy photovoltaic power project in Madagascar is the first large-scale solar power plant in the country and consists of 73,000 solar panels. It supplies around 20% of the island’s energy supply, significantly reducing Madagascar’s reliance on imported fossil fuels and thereby improving the country’s energy self-sufficiency.
The introduction of solar power to Madagascar is especially important to this country, in which less than one fifth of the population currently has access to electricity. The rural areas still predominantly use firewood and charcoals as fuel sources, which not only has a negative impact on indoor air quality but also contributes to carbon emissions.
